The Florida LGBTA Democratic Caucus applauds and celebrates the decision by the Boy Scouts of America National Executive Board to end the blanket ban on LGBT adult leadership.
The 45-12 vote confirms the unanimous vote by the BSA National Executive Committee two weeks ago to allow local Scout units to select adult leaders without regard to sexual orientation. Two years ago, the BSA voted to remove the ban on openly gay scouts.
Some religious organizations that sponsor troops have expressed negative reactions and the BSA has pledged to defend the right of any religious-sponsored united to continue to excluding LGBT adults. The Caucus joins with our partners the Human Rights Campaign in calling for the Boy Scouts of America to show leadership and establish a full national policy of inclusion to ensure that LGBT parents of current and future Boy Scouts can fully participate in their sons’ lives regardless of what entity sponsors their troop.
